WR Berkley Q1 2026 Market and Competitive Analysis in Casualty Insurance

Snapshot: casualty insurance conditions & competitive dynamics (Q1 2026, per WR Berkley’s commentary)

1) Competitive posture: broadly more competitive, but not uniformly

• Management describes the overall casualty/larger market as “more competitive” than a year ago and even more so than 2–3 years ago. ¹
• Even with that backdrop, they emphasize “pockets” of opportunity, particularly in casualty/liability areas where margin is still “available,” even if less broadly than before. ¹
• They also contrast casualty vs. property: WR Berkley says its organization is “bent towards casualty” and that property competition is “most pronounced”. ²

2) Pricing and rate adequacy signals: pressure easing in some niches, but not “solved”

• In casualty reinsurance, management frames pricing adequacy/margins as acceptable for business they choose to write—“if we’re writing the business, we believe that it’s an acceptable margin.” ³
• However, they also indicate there is evidence of market softness in their reinsurance casualty portfolio: their casualty portfolio within reinsurance was “down considerably” in the quarter due to the book shrinking, not because they were charging less for the same exposure. ³
• Management further notes market-wide competitive dynamics reflected in “a combination… of a more competitive market” and cedents struggling to reach desired top line. ⁴

3) Market participants shifting: national/standard carriers are showing broader “appetite”

• WR Berkley observes standard market/national carriers taking back business and presenting with “appetite… seemingly a bit broader” than before. ⁵
• Management adds a qualitative concern: “at times, it would appear as though they are misclassifying risks,” citing “some of the rates that they are entertaining.” ⁵
• They state this is more pronounced in shorter-tail lines, while it is “less visible” in some liability lines. ⁵

4) Reinsurance dynamics: “better to be a buyer than a seller,” and treaty erosion continues

• The firm describes an environment where WR Berkley sees the reinsurance gross vs. net relationship and states it is “better to be a buyer of reinsurance than a seller of reinsurance,” implying competitive intensity and/or underwriting economics that favor buyers. ⁶
• They also explicitly note that reinsurance growth/book effects are tied to market conditions, including competition and cedents’ top-line pressure. ⁴
• On what is changing tactically: WR Berkley indicates that ceding/reinsurance program participation has declined materially, with management stating the “lion’s share” of what they’re losing is “treaty reinsurance business,” attributable to pricing discipline. ⁷

5) Brokerage/MGA channel: delegated authority competition is not fading

• WR Berkley says it is not seeing any subsiding of MGA/delegated authority competition (“We are not seeing… subside in any way at this time.”). ⁸

6) Line-level competitive dynamics (what matters most in casualty)

Based on WR Berkley’s discussion, the competitive battleground in Q1 2026 looks “mixed-bag,” but with clear areas of differentiation:

a) Liability/casualty (insurance side): opportunity remains, but shorter-tail is most pressured

• Management says shorter-tail lines “have become notably more competitive,” and “certain aspects of the liability lines” are also more competitive. ¹
• Yet, because of WR Berkley’s breadth, they still find “attractive margins.” ¹
• Their go-to-market narrative: they are willing to “take our foot off of the rate pedal” somewhat, expecting some growth from niche opportunities. ⁹
  • They also explain timing mechanics: quoting ~90 days out means market pivot effects take time to convert into binders/written premium. ⁹

b) Workers’ comp: comparatively defensive posture; firming anticipated later

• WR Berkley reports workers’ comp growth has been lighter over recent quarters and they characterize their posture as “somewhat of a defensive posture… much out of the comp market that we participate in.” ¹⁰
• They expect “some type of firming” at some point, and say they would expand when that occurs, potentially “dramatically.” ¹⁰

c) Professional lines (coverage subsegments within casualty-related E&O/D&O/EPLI): growth exists but selective caution

• Management notes the firm had “strongest growth… since the first quarter of 2022 in professional lines” but attributes much of that growth to ex-U.S.; their U.S. comments were more focused. ¹¹
• They flag pause areas in professional lines: public D&O and components of the EPLI market. ¹¹
• They do not publicly unpack the best opportunity geographies/targets beyond that. ¹¹

7) Proof of market demand/competition: WR Berkley’s Q1 production shows growth despite pressure

Even as management describes competitive intensity, WR Berkley’s underwriting results show it is still finding room to grow:

• Insurance segment: gross premiums written up 4.5% to $3.4B and net premiums written up 3.2% to $2.8B despite heightened competition in certain pockets. ¹²
• They also state the firm expects its 2026 expense ratio to be “comfortably below 30%” barring material marketplace changes. ¹²
• Underwriting metrics (helpful context for how competitively “tough” the market is being absorbed):
  • Current accident year combined ratio ex cat losses: 88.3%, and calendar year combined ratio: 90.7%. ¹²
  • They attribute differences largely to cat losses: current accident year cat losses of 2.4 loss ratio points (~$76M) vs prior year 3.7 (~$111M). ¹²
  • They note ex-cats current accident year loss ratio increased slightly (insurance segment ex-cat loss ratio up 10 bps to 60.9%, while reinsurance/monoline access up to 51.1%). ¹²

Bottom line (as of Q1 2026)

• Competitive intensity is clearly up versus recent years, and rate/margin pressure is most pronounced where shorter-tail exposures and property are concentrated. ^{1 2}
• WR Berkley sees continuing opportunity in liability/casualty “pockets,” but less broadly than before, and reinsurance dynamics remain tight enough that they emphasize buying reinsurance rather than selling it. ^{1 6}
• Standard market carriers are more active and may be underwriting risk aggressively (or misclassifying), particularly in shorter-tail lines, while MGA/delegated authority competition remains persistent. ^{5 8}
• On future direction, management does not promise near-term outcomes, but they do expect some growth from niche opportunities and anticipate workers’ comp firming that could enable expansion later. ^{9 10}
