Clorox Q3 FY2026 Results: Innovation, Margins & Market Share Insights

Key highlights and updates from Clorox Q3 FY2026 results (from the earnings call)

1) Overall Q3 performance: mixed, driven by slower-than-expected progress in key businesses and gross margin pressure

• Management said Q3 results did not meet expectations, attributing this to slower progress than expected in some businesses, even though the company continued to make progress on market share across much of the portfolio. ¹
• The company also reported gross margin below expectations, driven by higher-than-expected supply chain costs and delayed cost savings, with the ERP stabilization prioritized in the year’s sequencing. ¹
• As a structural offset, management emphasized they are operating from a “much stronger foundation” after completing the ERP implementation, with service levels stabilized and complexity/costs coming down. ²

2) Execution foundation: ERP implementation completion and operational stabilization are key enablers

• The company stated that the ERP implementation is complete and that service levels have stabilized, while complexity and costs are coming down—all described as critical enablers of better execution. ²
• Management reiterated that in the front half of FY2026 they intentionally focused on implementing and stabilizing the new ERP, while in the back half they shifted focus toward rebuilding momentum, getting innovation to shelf, and sharpening execution. ¹

3) Innovation and “value superiority” momentum: stronger-than-expected performance in Cleaning and several innovation lines

Management highlighted continued portfolio momentum and strong innovation execution, especially in Cleaning. ³

• Cleaning business strength: described as a continued area of strength and the company’s largest business, with innovation executing “extraordinarily well.” ³
• Clorox PURE (allergen platform):
  • Management said the platform “has gone very well” with early distribution wins, including being online early and receiving great reviews. ⁴
  • They also cited preferred shelf placement and excitement/partnership from retailers, with plans for additional benefits in early FY2027. ⁴
  • They characterized results “from a velocity perspective” as above expectations. ⁴
• Other Cleaning innovations:
  • Scentiva expansion continues to do well, including a new Cherry Blossom “flavor” that management called their #1 scent, with expansion into different forms. ⁴
• Food and Glad innovation/launches:
  • Management said Food launches are off to a good start, and highlighted Glad trash bags with a new absorbent layer plus a new scent, with confidence in distribution plans. ⁴

4) Share and category momentum: Glad progress and returned share growth in Food

• Management described continued momentum:
  • Cleaning innovation is strong. ³
  • International continues to perform with strength despite disruptions. ³
  • Glad: management said shares have sequentially improved quarter after quarter, with distribution pick up and actions involving investing back in price. ³
  • Food: management said they returned to share growth in the quarter. ³
• However, management also called out a shortfall versus expectations in a few businesses, with progress expected in Q4 and improvement in FY2027. ³

5) The biggest “behind expectations” area: Litter Fresh Step reset is causing “bumpier” near-term progress

Management singled out Litter as the most important shortfall and described an ongoing transformation as a multi-year effort. ³

• They said category tailwinds remain exceptionally strong, but the company is committed to getting back lost share via a “complete reinvention” and fundamental reset of Fresh Step. ³
• The transformation included changing items, names, claims, pack size/price-pack architecture, and the rollout began at the end of Q3. ³
• Distribution for the conversion was described as generally in line with expectations, but some elements were not yet where they needed to be, including shelf placement at certain key retailers, with adjustments underway. ⁵
• Management cautioned Litter is expected to be “bumpier” and not fully proven yet in-market; they also emphasized it’s a multiyear process. ⁵
• They reaffirmed that while this first step is underway, they need innovation back on track over time to move from rebuilding to growing share. ⁵
• CFO-level commentary added color on the consumer “mapping” challenge from old Fresh Step to new items, noting distribution conversion complexity and that changes are being made with retailers. ⁵³

6) Other important “watch-outs”: Food category weakness and promotional intensity

• Management said Food grew share, but the category itself was weaker than expected—they expected a low single-digit decline but saw a mid-single-digit decline. ⁵
• They cited high promotional intensity and deep discounting from competitors that is putting pressure on dollars. ⁵
• They also noted consumer trends they are watching, including GLP-1s. ⁵
• For Hidden Valley, management said they did price pack architecture work as part of mitigating actions. ⁵

7) Shipment vs. consumption dynamics: mostly timing noise, with early shipments expected to reverse in Q4

• Management addressed timing differences between shipment and consumption at the company level, noting about 1 point of negative timing relative to consumption for the total company in U.S. retail. ⁶
• They said this timing headwind reversed in Q3 due to prior-quarter shipment favorability (linked to Health and Wellness manufacturing ERP timing). ⁶
• They also described other “noise” from retailer inventory adjustments (one-time) and early shipments (expected to reverse in Q4), including early shipments in Litter and Kingsford. ⁶

8) Private label: described as stable; consumers still shopping for brands

• Management said private label shares have been flat/stabilized across most categories, with occasional upticks when retailers promote or introduce new items. ⁷
• They characterized the broader demand signal as consumers continuing to want brands and value rather than only the lowest price. ⁷
• They said private label remained unchanged this quarter and continued shopping for brands. ⁸
• They highlighted one area of careful monitoring: Brita, where they have seen some private-label pickup, but believe Clorox innovation helps them regain share over time. ⁷

9) Cost and margin updates: near-term dilution and nonrepeating headwinds cited around integration items and elevated inputs

While the excerpts provided are largely discussion-focused, management did quantify several margin headwinds for forward periods:

• For the fourth quarter outlook framing, management described a gross margin bridge vs. last Q4 that included:
  • ~5 points of decline vs. last Q4 gross margin. ⁹
  • Components included 150 bps from lapping strong shipment/operating leverage associated with the ERP transition. ⁹
  • ~200 bps from the GOJO acquisition. ⁹
  • ~150 bps of nonrepeating onetime items in Q4 tied to inventory value step-up associated with the acquisition (described as nonrepeating). ⁹
  • ~100 to 150 bps of elevated input costs related to conflict in the Middle East. ⁹
• They also stated that in the first year after integration, business EBITDA margin is expected to be in line with Clorox and year 1 EBITDA neutral, plus run-rate cost synergies of at least $50 million expected—implying accretion over time. ¹⁰
• For the GOJO-related P&L impacts, management stated gross margin dilution of about 50 basis points in year 1, with gross margin expected to increase over time as supply chain synergies are realized. ¹¹
• They quantified onetime headwinds in Q4 of ~150 bps related to inventory value step-up, described as nonrepeating. ¹¹

10) Management’s outlook posture: progress, but “finish the year stronger” as FY2027 execution accelerates

• Management concluded that despite a challenging environment, they have the strategy and capabilities to finish FY2026 stronger and enter FY2027 with greater momentum, stressing the ERP foundation and improving execution enablers. ²
• They also stated that with the ERP now complete, they can better translate innovation, investments, and distribution gains into value superiority for stronger results, and focus on fundamentals and accelerating innovation performance in the remaining quarters. ¹²

---

Bottom line (what changed vs. expectations, and where it’s strong)

• Strongest areas: Innovation execution—especially in Cleaning (notably Clorox PURE)—and continued improvements in Glad momentum and share growth returning in Food. ⁴³
• Key gap vs. expectations: Litter Fresh Step transformation started rolling out at end of Q3, but management warned near-term progress is likely bumpier due to the complexity of mapping consumers to the new items and shelf placement changes. ³⁵
• Margin headwinds: Gross margin was below expectations due to supply chain costs and delayed savings while stabilizing ERP; additional margin bridge items referenced later (ERP lapping, GOJO-related dilution/onetime items, and input cost pressure). ¹⁹
