What were the main drivers of the $3.1 billion first-quarter net outflow?
Artisan Partners reported firm-wide net outflows of $3.1 billion in the first quarter. 1 Management indicated that these outflows were concentrated in a few equity strategies and were driven by client behavior consistent with de-risking and reallocations, plus shifting to passive alternatives. 1
Management said outflows were concentrated in a few equity strategies where clients were de-risking and reallocating after periods of asset class outperformance. 1 This implies that when equities had recently outperformed, some clients rotated capital away from certain active equity offerings, resulting in net outflows. 1
In discussing the equity business, management described two primary drivers, with the first being rebalancing across international strategies. 2 Specifically, they cited that the EV market was up ~30% relative to a still-strong U.S. market, and that rebalancing occurred “across a number of teams” and within international value in particular. 2 Management also stated there was no termination activity in that international value book, framing the behavior as rebalance-oriented rather than structural client abandonment. 2
The second primary driver for equity outflows was connected to the growth business / global opportunity strategy, which management said was challenged on some shorter- and intermediate-term performance. 2 They noted this caused headwinds and “challenges” within institutional relationships globally. 2 This provides a clear mechanism for why net outflows occurred: when relative performance on key time horizons lagged, certain institutional relationships reduced allocations. 2
Beyond active-to-active reallocation and performance-driven attrition, management also explicitly mentioned some shifting to passive alternatives as part of the mix behind the equity-driven net outflows. 1 This is consistent with investors reallocating away from active management when they perceive relative value deteriorating or when they want to reduce complexity/active risk. 1
While the $3.1 billion outflow was equity-concentrated, management emphasized it masked positive developments elsewhere—including net inflows across 13 investment strategies year-to-date, a $250 million inflow to the sustainable emerging markets strategy in the first quarter, and $800 million of net inflows in credit in the first quarter. 1 They also described continued strength/flow momentum in credit and alternatives during the period. 3
Bottom line: The $3.1 billion net outflow was mainly explained by equity strategy-specific client behavior—rebalancing/de-risking, performance-related challenges in a key growth/opportunity franchise, and some movement to passive alternatives—with no indication of termination activity in the international value book and with other areas of the platform showing offsetting inflows. 12

PNC sees a path to at least 3% Q4 net interest margin as loan-yield increases and fixed-rate securities repricing help offset higher deposit costs. The discussion also weighs the longer-term outlook against lower-spread, high-quality loan growth, which can dilute NIM while supporting credit quality, client relationships, and fee revenue. No specific 2027 NII or NIM target was provided.

Research questionWhat supports confidence in reaching a 3% or higher net interest margin in Q4 despite higher deposit costs and continued growth in lower-spread, higher-quality loans, how might these dynamics affect 2027, and what is the trade-off between those loans’ impact on NII and their other benefits?

Marsh McLennan reported 14% Q3 growth in Management Consulting, supported by strong demand for AI-related client work. Management also cited favorable success-fee timing, while describing internal AI efficiencies as early-stage. The available discussion does not establish that faster delivery or backlog reduction materially pulled project revenue forward.

Morgan Stanley described its nearly $30 billion sequential deposit increase as a deliberate investment in long-term funding capacity and client relationships, not a push to maximize near-term net interest income. Deposits reached $465 billion, while deposit mix modestly weighed on quarterly NII; management expects funding benefits to emerge over time and forecast a conditional modest increase in fourth-quarter NII.

Wells Fargo expects fourth-quarter 2026 net interest income of about $13 billion, supported by loan and deposit growth, asset repricing, higher securities balances, and rates. The full-year outlook remains $50 billion, plus or minus. Management did not disclose a numerical Q4 markets/non-markets split; its roughly $1.8 billion markets estimate applies to the full year, not the quarter.

PepsiCo said its typical 6–12-month hedging program had buffered some input-cost increases, but costs are rising as those hedges roll off, with effects expected in Q4. Management cited inflation, unfavorable mix, and higher input costs as pressures on margins and earnings guidance, while pointing to pricing and revenue-management actions, productivity, and structural cost reductions as partial offsets.

PepsiCo’s Q3 2026 discussion points to broad-based international growth, supported by improving competitiveness and stronger volumes, while leaving the durability of that pace unguaranteed. In North America, management plans to continue targeted pricing, affordability measures, innovation, and marketing investment. The Q4 earnings revision reflected margin pressure from costs, mix, and maintained investment, creating risks to monitor in 2027 without establishing a quantified outlook.
