Answer

Current China demand signals (2026) for A. O. Smith

1) Demand is weak and expected to persist

China sales fell 17% (local currency) in Q1 2026, which management said was in line with expectations and broader market performance. ¹
Management attributes the softness to discontinuation of most government stimulus programs and continued low consumer confidence, leaving water heater and water treatment markets challenged, especially the premium segment where A. O. Smith competes. ¹
For the full year outlook, A. O. Smith now expects China sales to be down low double digits in local currency vs. last year, with Q2 sales down ~15% vs. Q1 as it balances channel inventories. ²

2) Backlog/order visibility appears constrained by channel conditions and assessment uncertainty (demand isn’t collapsing, but it’s not strengthening)

In Q1, management indicated the whole market was challenging and A. O. Smith did not lose meaningful share; they maintained share but were operating in a down market condition. ³
Management also said its ongoing strategic assessment has created uncertainty in the market and delayed certain investments, which management believes adds pressure to the China business. ¹
They expect Q2 to be difficult and specifically flagged the need to exit Q2 with better channel inventory balance (inventories described as relatively the same as last year, but the company wants them leaner in this environment). ⁴

3) Management sees “no meaningful share loss,” but demand headwinds dominate

Management’s framing is not “collapse,” but “challenged down market”: no meaningful share loss in Q1 alongside stimulus run its course and low consumer confidence. ¹³
The company expects persistent headwinds throughout the year due to continued low consumer demand, severely limited government stimulus, and ongoing competitive pressures. ²

Backlog signals: what the excerpts imply (and what they do not)

The excerpts provided do not give a China-specific backlog number (e.g., order backlog, book-to-bill, or contracted future shipments) for China.
What they do provide are demand/channel and inventory signals that function like “leading indicators” for backlog conversion:
- Sales declines (Q1 -17% local currency; Q2 expected -15% vs. Q1; full-year low double-digit decline). ¹⁴²
- Channel inventory balancing as an explicit near-term action, implying the company is managing inventory-to-demand rather than reporting improving backlog. ⁴²
- Assessment uncertainty delaying investments, which tends to reduce willingness to commit to future channel actions (a common precursor to weaker order flow). ¹

How these China signals impact A. O. Smith’s 2026 outlook

1) China weakness is directly embedded in the revised Rest of World / China guidance

Management revised China guidance to down low double digits in local currency for 2026 and tied it to persistent headwinds and competitive pressure, plus ongoing channel/inventory balancing. ²
They also guided Rest of World (which includes China) outcomes: Q1 Rest of World sales decreased 11% year over year due to continued weak consumer demand in China. ⁵

2) Investment timing and assessment effects extend the time to recovery

A key impact mechanism is timing: management said actions to improve China performance are pending the conclusion of its assessment, and therefore this is impacting the expected recovery timeframe. ²
They also stated the assessment is creating market uncertainty and delaying certain investments, adding pressure to the China business. ¹

3) 2026 earnings outlook includes this headwind backdrop, with the “recovery” not assumed to be immediate

The company’s revised 2026 adjusted EPS range is $3.70 to $4.00 per share, excluding an approximately $20 million restructuring/impairment charge in Q2. ⁶
Near-term cadence guidance highlights that while North America should normalize somewhat in the back half, China remains pressured (e.g., Q2 expected down ~15% with decremental margins of 35%–40%), reinforcing that China is a contributor to weaker intermediate-year performance. ⁴

Bottom line (China demand/backlog → outlook impact)

Demand in China for A. O. Smith is currently weak and expected to remain weak through 2026, evidenced by Q1 -17% local-currency sales, Q2 expected -15% vs. Q1, and full-year low double-digit local-currency decline guidance, driven by low consumer confidence, limited/ending stimulus, and competitive pressures, with premium segment challenges. ¹⁴²
Backlog visibility in the excerpts is indirectly signaled rather than quantified: the company is focused on channel inventory balancing and is dealing with uncertainty from its strategic assessment that has delayed investments, both of which typically suppress order generation/conversion. ¹⁴²
These signals are directly reflected in the 2026 outlook via revised China sales expectations and a difficult near-term China earnings cadence, with the company emphasizing that recovery is delayed because some improvement actions depend on concluding the assessment. ⁴²
